History
The first petition, and the Fair Playoffs website, was launched in 2011 and garnered only 65 supporters. In 2014, private schools won 7 of 8 state champions in football and a new petition was launched. That petition was signed by 1,293 people! A new petition was launched in 2016. This new petition was backed by data from all sports that shows private schools win 2 to 3 times as many state titles as they should statistically. The new petition simply asks the MHSAA “provide state championship data to member schools and let them have a yes or no vote on implementing a competitive balance proposal. If member schools vote yes, a second vote should be taken to pick a particular system to assure greater fairness in the playoffs.” The current petition has over 5,000 signatures. A lot of petition signers are parents. Unfortunately, the MHSAA takes no feedback or direction from parents, even though they are key stakeholders in high school athletics. So even though you are encouraged to sign the petition, getting your school board to sign the Fair Playoffs Resolution is much more powerful.
